About the Author
Dr Michael Mosley is a science presenter, journalist and executive producer.
After training to be a doctor at the Royal Free Hospital in London, he spent 25
years at the BBC, where he made numerous science documentaries. Now
freelance, he is the author of several bestselling books, The Fast Diet, The 8-
Week Blood Sugar Diet and The Clever Guts Diet. He is married with four children.
Dr Clare Bailey, wife of Michael Mosley, is a GP who has pioneered a
dietary approach to health and reducing blood sugars and diabetes at her
surgery in Buckinghamshire. She is the author of The 8-Week Blood Sugar
Diet Recipe Book and The Clever Guts Diet Recipe Book.

In 2012, I wrote a book with journalist Mimi Spencer, called The Fast Diet.
In that book we laid out the principles and health benefits of what was then
a very novel way of dieting called ‘intermittent fasting’.
Although we mentioned different ways of fasting, we focused on
something which I called ‘the 5:2 approach’. Instead of cutting your calories
every day, as you would on a standard diet, I suggested it might be easier to
cut down to around 600 calories, for men, and 500 calories, for women, on
two days a week, and then eat normally on the other five days.
It was a message that really resonated. The Fast Diet rapidly became an
international bestseller, translated into 40 languages, and the diet was
embraced by a wide range of people, including doctors, politicians, celebrities
and Nobel Prize winners. The comedian and Oscar host, Jimmy Kimmel, lost
25lb on the 5:2, and has kept it off by continuing to cut his calories two days a
week. He recently told Men’s Journal that it makes you appreciate food more.
The actor, Benedict Cumberbatch, said he did it ‘for Sherlock’.
The NHS website, which originally described the 5:2 as a ‘fad diet’, now
says in its ‘Top Diets Review’ that ‘sticking to a regimen for two days a week
can be more achievable than seven days, so you may be more likely to
persevere with this way of eating and successfully lose weight’.
It goes on to add, ‘Two days a week on a restricted diet can lead to greater
reductions in body fat, insulin resistance and other chronic diseases.’1
From the 5:2 to the 8-Week Blood Sugar Diet
I first became interested in intermittent fasting when I discovered, through a
random blood test, that I had type 2 diabetes. The doctor said that I needed to
go on medication. This was a nasty shock because my overweight dad had
developed diabetes in his fifties and died of diabetes-related illnesses at the
relatively young age of 74. I didn’t want to go down the same path.
So I set out to find out if there was a drug-free way to ‘cure’ my diabetes,
and that’s when I first heard about the idea of periodically fasting for both
weight loss and better general health. It sounded so interesting that I
persuaded the BBC to let me make a science documentary about it called Eat,
Fast, Live Longer, with myself as the guinea pig.
I tested a number of different forms of intermittent fasting before settling
on the 5:2. Using that approach, I managed to lose 9kg and get my blood
sugars back to normal, without medication.
Then, a few years later, I came across some startling new research being
carried out by Professor Roy Taylor, a diabetes specialist at Newcastle
University. He told me the main reason I had managed to knock my diabetes
on the head was that I had lost a lot of weight, fast. He had done studies
showing that, if you lose over 10% of your body weight (which I had), the fat
is drained from your liver and pancreas, and your body is restored to its
former health.
When we first met, Roy had just started a big trial, hoping to prove that an
800-calorie-a-day rapid weight loss diet would not only lead to massive
weight loss but also help most patients with type 2 diabetes come off all
medication and restore their blood sugars to normal.
This was revolutionary stuff, as most doctors believe that type 2 diabetes is
incurable and the only way to treat it is with drugs.
I became so convinced by Roy’s research that, with his help, I wrote a
second book, The 8-Week Blood Sugar Diet. In this book, which is aimed at
people with type 2 diabetes and pre-diabetes (those whose blood sugars are
raised but not yet in the diabetic range), I described how to follow a rapid
weight loss programme, cutting your calorie intake to 800 a day. This book
also became an international bestseller, and thousands of people who followed
the programme have managed to get their blood sugars back under control
without medication. Doctors, nurses and diabetes specialists now recommend
the book in clinical practice. My wife, Clare, is a GP and has been using this
approach to transform the lives of hundreds of her patients. One patient lost so
much weight Clare didn’t recognise him! She is passionate about the power of
food to change lives and created the recipes for this book.

Getting the Most from This Book
This is more than a book; it is a guide to a 40-day spiritual journey that will enable you to discover the answer to life's most important question: What on earth am I here for? By the end of this journey you will know God's purpose for your life and will understand the big picture-how all the pieces of your life fit together. Having this perspective will reduce your stress, simplify your decisions, increase your satisfaction, and, most important, prepare you for eternity.

Today the average life span is 25,550 days. That's how long you will live if you are typical. Don't you think it would be a wise use of time to set aside 40 of those days to figure out what God wants you to do with the rest of them?
The Bible is clear that God considers 40 days a spiritually significant time period. Whenever God wanted to prepare someone for his purposes, he took 40 days:
• Noah's life was transformed by 40 days of rain.
• Moses was transformed by 40 days on Mount Sinai.
• The spies were transformed by 40 days in the Promised Land.
• David was transformed by Goliath's 40-day challenge.
• Elijah was transformed when God gave him 40 days of strength from a single meal.
• The entire city of Nineveh was transformed when God gave the people 40 days to change.
• Jesus was empowered by 40 days in the wilderness.
• The disciples were transformed by 40 days with Jesus after his resurrection.
The next 40 days will transform your life.
This book is divided into 40 brief chapters. I strongly urge you to read only one chapter a day, so you will have time to think about the implications for your life. The Bible says, "Let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will know what God wants you to do."
One reason most books don't transform us is that we are so eager to read the next chapter, we don't pause and take the time to seriously consider what we have just read. We rush to the next truth without reflecting on what we have learned.
Don't just read this book. Interact with it. Underline it.
Write your own thoughts in the margins. Make it your book. Personalize it! The books that have helped me most are the ones that I reacted to, not just read.

At the end of each chapter is a section called "Thinking about My Purpose." There you will find:
• A Point to Ponder. This is a nugget of truth that summarizes a principle of purpose-driven living that you can reflect on throughout your day. Paul told Timothy, "Reflect on what I am saying, for the Lord will give you insight into all this."
• A Verse to Remember. This is a Bible verse that teaches a truth from that chapter. If you really want to improve your life, memorizing Scripture may be the most important habit you can begin. You can either copy these verses onto small cards to carry with you, or purchase a Purpose-Driven Life Scripture Keeper Plus.
• A Question to Consider. These questions will help you think about the implications of what you have read and how it applies to you personally. Let me encourage you to write your answers in the margin of this book or in a notebook, or obtain a copy of The Purpose-Driven Life journal, a companion book designed for this purpose. Writing down your thoughts is the best way to clarify them.
In appendix 1 you will find:
• Discussion Questions. I strongly urge you to get one or more friends to join you in reading this book during the next 40 days. A journey is always better when it is shared. With a partner or a small reading group you can discuss what you read and bounce ideas off each other. This will help you grow stronger and deeper spiritually. Real spiritual growth is never an isolated, individualistic pursuit. Maturity is produced through relationships and community.
The best way to explain God's purpose for your life is to allow the Scripture to speak for itself, so in this book the Bible is quoted extensively, using over a thousand different verses from fifteen English translations and paraphrases. I have varied the versions used for several important reasons, which I explain in appendix 3.

As I wrote this book, I often prayed that you would experience the incredible sense of hope, energy, and joy that comes from discovering what God put you on this planet to do. There's nothing quite like it. I am excited because I know all the great things that are going to happen to you. They happened to me, and I have never been the same since I discovered the purpose of my life.
Because I know the benefits, I want to challenge you to stick with this spiritual journey for
the next 40 days, not missing a single daily reading. Your life is worth taking the time to think about it. Make it a daily appointment on your schedule. If you will commit to this, let's sign a covenant together. There is something significant about signing your name to a commitment. If you get a partner to read through this with you, have him or her sign it, too. Let's get started together!

Ikigai: A mysterious word

THIS BOOK FIRST came into being on a rainy night in Tokyo, when its authors sat
down together for the first time in one of the city’s tiny bars.
We had read each other’s work but had never met, thanks to the thousands of
miles that separate Barcelona from the capital of Japan. Then a mutual
acquaintance put us in touch, launching a friendship that led to this project and
seems destined to last a lifetime.
The next time we got together, a year later, we strolled through a park in
downtown Tokyo and ended up talking about trends in Western psychology,
specifically logotherapy, which helps people find their purpose in life.
We remarked that Viktor Frankl’s logotherapy had gone out of fashion among
practicing therapists, who favored other schools of psychology, though people
still search for meaning in what they do and how they live. We ask ourselves
things like:
What is the meaning of my life?
Is the point just to live longer, or should I seek a higher purpose?
Why do some people know what they want and have a passion for life, while
others languish in confusion?

At some point in our conversation, the mysterious word ikigai came up.
This Japanese concept, which translates roughly as “the happiness of always
being busy,” is like logotherapy, but it goes a step beyond. It also seems to be one
way of explaining the extraordinary longevity of the Japanese, especially on the
island of Okinawa, where there are 24.55 people over the age of 100 for every
100,000 inhabitants—far more than the global average.
Those who study why the inhabitants of this island in the south of Japan live
longer than people anywhere else in the world believe that one of the keys—in
addition to a healthful diet, a simple life in the outdoors, green tea, and the
subtropical climate (its average temperature is like that of Hawaii)—is the ikigai
that shapes their lives.
While researching this concept, we discovered that not a single book in the
fields of psychology or personal development is dedicated to bringing this
philosophy to the West.
Is ikigai the reason there are more centenarians in Okinawa than anywhere
else? How does it inspire people to stay active until the very end? What is the
secret to a long and happy life?
As we explored the matter further, we discovered that one place in particular,
Ogimi, a rural town on the north end of the island with a population of three
thousand, boasts the highest life expectancy in the world—a fact that has earned
it the nickname the Village of Longevity.

Okinawa is where most of Japan’s shikuwasa—a limelike fruit that packs an
extraordinary antioxidant punch—comes from. Could that be Ogimi’s secret to
long life? Or is it the purity of the water used to brew its Moringa tea?
We decided to go study the secrets of the Japanese centenarians in person.
After a year of preliminary research we arrived in the village—where residents
speak an ancient dialect and practice an animist religion that features long-haired
forest sprites called bunagaya—with our cameras and recording devices in hand.
As soon as we arrived we could sense the incredible friendliness of its residents,
who laughed and joked incessantly amid lush green hills fed by crystalline waters.
As we conducted our interviews with the eldest residents of the town, we
realized that something far more powerful than just these natural resources was at
work: an uncommon joy flows from its inhabitants and guides them through the
long and pleasurable journey of their lives.
Again, the mysterious ikigai.

But what is it, exactly? How do you get it?
It never ceased to surprise us that this haven of nearly eternal life was located
precisely in Okinawa, where two hundred thousand innocent lives were lost at the
end of World War II. Rather than harbor animosity toward outsiders, however,
Okinawans live by the principle of ichariba chode, a local expression that means
“treat everyone like a brother, even if you’ve never met them before.”
It turns out that one of the secrets to happiness of Ogimi’s residents is feeling
like part of a community. From an early age they practice yuimaaru, or
teamwork, and so are used to helping one another.
Nurturing friendships, eating light, getting enough rest, and doing regular,
moderate exercise are all part of the equation of good health, but at the heart of
the joie de vivre that inspires these centenarians to keep celebrating birthdays and
cherishing each new day is their ikigai.
The purpose of this book is to bring the secrets of Japan’s centenarians to you
and give you the tools to find your own ikigai.
Because those who discover their ikigai have everything they need for a long
and joyful journey through life.
Happy travels!

“You can ‘get’ Stephen Covey’s message in five pages—or less. But I dearly hope
you will carefully read and apply every page. Stephen has given us a precious gift,
but, like most profound ideas, it is the daily, conscious practice that can or will
transform your life.”
—Tom Peters, author of The Brand You 50
and Re-imagine: Business Excellence in a Disruptive Age
“In this book, Covey reaches out way beyond his familiar domain, to the universe,
and has come up with a social vaccine capable of addressing if not resolving the
existential agonies and angst that we all face as individuals, as well as the
organizations and societies that we work and live in. In this Olympiad vault, Covey
has written his most ambitious and hopeful book, in my own view—a masterpiece
to benefit all of us doing our best to live in peace and justice in this messy world.”
—Warren Bennis, Distinguished Professor of Management,
University of Southern California, and author of the memoir Still Surprised
“A most compelling approach for addressing the most challenging issues of the day.
It is an inarguable formula for success in the corporate world and beyond.”
—Douglas R. Conant, retired CEO, Campbell Soup Company,
and New York Times bestselling author
“Dr. Covey has done it again. The 3rd Alternative is not only powerful reading,
it answers some of life’s most challenging questions. A must-read for all future leaders.”
—Jon M. Huntsman, Sr.,
executive chairman and founder of Huntsman Corporation

In the case of all things which have several parts, the whole is something beside the parts.
Synergy is the only word in our language that means behavior of whole

system’s separate parts or any subassembly of the system’s parts.
—Buckminster Fuller
Synergy: a mutually advantageous conjunction or compatibility
