DREAMS OF DESTINY
A consistent man believes in destiny, a capricious 1 man in chance.
BENJAMIN DISRAELI

We all have dreams... We all want to believe deep down in our souls that we have a special gift, that we can make a difference, that we can touch others in a special way, and that we can make the world a better place. At one time in our lives, we all had a vision for the quality of life that we desire and
deserve. Yet, for many of us, those dreams have become so shrouded2 in the frustrations and routines of daily life that we no longer even make an effort to accomplish3 them. For far too many, the dream has dissipated4—and with it, so has the will to shape our destinies. Many have lost that sense of certainty that creates the winner's edge. My life's quest has been to restore the dream and to make it real, to get each of us to remember and use the unlimited power that lies sleeping within us all.
I´ll never forget the day it really hit me that I was truly living my dream. I was flying my jet helicopter from a business meeting in Los Angeles, traveling to Orange County on the way to one of my seminars. As I flew over the city of Glendale, I suddenly recognized a large building, and I stopped the helicopter and hovered above it. As I looked down, I realized this was the building that I'd worked in as a janitor5 a mere twelve years ago!
In those days, I had been concerned whether my 1960 Volkswagen would hang together for the 30-minute trip to work, my life had been focused on how I was going to survive; I had felt fearful and alone. But that day, as I hovered there in the sky, I thought, "What a difference a decade can make!" I did have dreams back then, but at the time, it seemed they'd never be realized. Today, though, I've come to believe that all my past failure and frustration were actually laying the foundation for the understandings that have created the new level of living I now enjoy. As I continued my flight south along the coastal route, I spotted dolphins playing with the surfers in the waves below. It's a sight that my wife, Becky, and I treasure as one of life's special gifts. Finally, I reached Irvine. Looking below, I was a little disturbed when I saw that the off ramp to my seminar was jammed with bumper-to-bumper traffic for more than a mile. 1 thought to myself, "Boy, I hope whatever else is going on tonight gets started soon so that the people coming to my seminar arrive on time."
But as I descended to the helipad, I began to see a new picture: thousands of people being held back by security where I was just about to land. Suddenly I began to grasp the reality. The traffic jam had been caused by people going to my event! Although we had expected approximately 2,000 attendees, I was facing a crowd of 7,000—in an auditorium that would hold only 5,000! When I walked into the arena from the landing pad, I was surrounded by hundreds of people who wanted to give me a hug or tell me how my work had positively impacted their lives.
The stories they shared with me were incredible. One mother introduced me to her son who had been labeled "hyperactive" and "learning disabled." Utilizing the principles of state management taught in this book, she was not only able to get him off the drug Ritalin, but they had also since been transferred to California where her son had been retested and evaluated at the level of genius! You should have seen his face as she shared with me his new label. A gentleman talked about how he had freed himself from cocaine using some of the Success Conditioning techniques you'll learn in this book. A couple in their mid-fifties shared with me that, after fifteen years of marriage, they had been on the brink of divorce until they learned about personal rules. A salesman told me how his monthly income had jumped from $2,000 to over $12,000 in a mere six months, and an entrepreneur related that he had increased corporate revenues by over $3 million in eighteen months by applying the
principles of quality questions and emotional management. A lovely young woman showed me a picture of her former self, having lost fifty-two pounds by applying the principles of leverage that are detailed in this book.
I was touched so deeply by the emotions in that room that I got choked6 up, and at first I couldn't speak. As I looked out on my audience and saw 5,000 smiling, cheering, loving faces, in that moment I realized that I am living my dream! What a feeling to know that beyond a shadow of a doubt I had the information, strategies, philosophies, and skills that could assist any one of these people in empowering themselves to make the changes they desired most! A flood of images and emotions flowed over me. I began to remember an experience I'd had only a few years before, sitting in my 400-square-foot bachelor apartment in Venice, California, all alone and crying as I listened to the lyrics of a Neil Diamond song: "I am, I said, to no one there. And no one heard at all, not even the chair. I am, I cried. I am, said I. And I am lost, and I can't even say why, leavin' me lonely still." I remembered feeling like my life didn't matter, as if the events of the world were controlling me. I also remember the moment my life changed, the moment I finally said, "I've had it! I know I'm much more than I'm demonstrating mentally, emotionally, and physically in my life." I made a decision in that moment which was to alter my life forever. I decided to change virtually7 every aspect of my life. I decided I would never again settle for less than I could be. Who would have guessed that this decision would bring me to such an incredible moment?
I gave my all at the seminar that night, and when I left the auditorium, crowds of people followed me to the helicopter to see me off. To say I was deeply moved by the experience would be an understatement. A tear slid down my cheek as I thanked my Creator for these wonderful gifts. As I lifted off the grass and ascended into the moonlight, I had to pinch myself. Could this be real? Am I the same guy who eight years ago was struggling, frustrated, feeling alone and incapable of making my life work? Fat, broke, and wondering if I could even survive? How could a young kid like me with nothing but a high school education have created such dramatic changes?
My answer is simple: I learned to harness the principle I now call concentration of power. Most people have no idea of the giant capacity we can immediately command when we focus all of our resources on mastering a single area of our lives. Controlled focus is like a laser beam that can cut through anything that seems to be stopping you. When we focus consistently on improvement in any area, we develop unique distinctions on how to make that area better. One reason so few of us achieve what we truly want is that we never direct our focus; we never concentrate our power. Most people dabble their way through life, never deciding to master anything in particular. In fact, I believe most people fail in life simply because they major in minor things. I believe that one of life's major lessons is learning to understand what makes us do what we do. What shapes human behavior? The answers to this question provide critical keys to shaping your own destiny.
My entire life has been continually driven by a singular, compelling focus: What makes the difference in the quality of people's lives? How is it that so often people from such humble beginnings and devastating backgrounds manage in spite of it all to create lives that inspire us? Conversely, why
do many of those born into privileged environments, with every resource for success at their fingertips, end up fat, frustrated, and often chemically addicted? What makes some people's lives an example and others' a warning? What is the secret that creates passionate, happy, and grateful lives in many, while for others the refrain might be, "Is that all there is?"
My own magnificent obsession began with some simple questions: "How can I take immediate control of my life? What can I do today that can make a difference—that could help me and others to shape our destinies? How can I expand, learn, grow, and share that knowledge with others in a meaningful and enjoyable way?"
At a very early age, I developed a belief that we're all here to contribute something unique, that deep within each of us lies a special gift. You see, I truly believe we all have a sleeping giant within us. Each of us has a talent, a gift, our own bit of genius just waiting to be tapped. It might be a talent for art or music. It might be a special way of relating to the ones you love. It might be a genius for selling or innovating or reaching out in your business or your career. I choose to believe that our Creator doesn't play favorites, that we've all been created unique, but with equal opportunities for experiencing life to the fullest. I decided many years ago that the most important way I could spend my life would be to invest it in something that would outlast it. I decided that somehow I must contribute in some way that would live on long after I was gone.
Today, I have the incredible privilege of sharing my ideas and feelings with literally millions of people through my books, tapes, and television shows. I've personally worked with over a quarter of a million people in the last few years alone. I've assisted members of Congress, CEOs, presidents of companies and countries, managers and mothers, salespeople, accountants, lawyers, doctors, psychiatrists, counselors, and professional athletes. I've worked with phobics, the clinically depressed, people with multiple personalities, and those who thought they had no personality. Now I have the unique good fortune of sharing the best of what I've learned with you, and for that opportunity I am truly grateful and excited.
Through it all, I've continued to recognize the power individuals have to change virtually anything and everything in their lives in an instant. I've learned that the resources we need to turn our dreams into reality are within us, merely waiting for the day when we decide to wake up and claim our birthright. I wrote this book for one reason: to be a wake-up call that will challenge those who are committed to living and being more to tap their God-given power. There are ideas and strategies in this book to help you produce specific, measurable, long-lasting changes in yourself and others.
You see, I believe I know who you really are. I believe you and I must be kindred souls. Your desire to expand has brought you to this book. It is the invisible hand that guided you. I know that no matter where you are in your life, you want more! No matter how well you're already doing or how challenged you now may be, deep inside of you there lies a belief that your experience of life can and will be much greater than it already is. You are destined for your own unique form of greatness, whether it is as an outstanding professional, teacher, businessperson, mother, or father. Most importantly, you not only believe this, but you've taken action. You not only bought this book, but you're also doing something right now that unfortunately is unique—you're reading it! Statistics show that less than 10 percent of people who buy a book read past the first chapter. What an unbelievable
waste! This is a giant book that you can use to produce giant results in your life. Clearly, you're the kind of person who won't cheat yourself by dabbling. By consistently taking advantage of each of the chapters in this book, you'll ensure your ability to maximize your potential.
I challenge you not only to do whatever it takes to read this book in its entirety (unlike the masses who quit) but also to use what you learn in simple ways each day. This is the all-important step that's necessary for you to produce the results you're committed to.

About the Author
JOHN C. MAXWELL, known as America’s expert on leadership, speaks in person
to hundreds of thousands of people each year. He has communicated his
leadership principles to Fortune 500 companies, the United States Military
Academy at West Point, and sports organizations such as the NCAA, the NBA, and the NFL.
Maxwell is the founder of Injoy Stewardship Services, as well as several other
organizations dedicated to helping people reach their leadership potential. He
dedicates much of his time to training leaders worldwide through EQUIP, a
nonprofit organization. The New York Times best-selling author has written more
than forty books, including Winning with People, Thinking for a Change, and the
two million-sellers, Developing the Leader Within You and The 21 Irrefutable
Laws of Leadership.

These are classic pictures of leadership: William Wallace leading the charge of
his warriors against the army that would oppress his people and him. Winston
Churchill defying the Nazi threat as much of Europe collapsed. Mahatma Gandhi
leading the two-hundred-mile march to the sea to protest the Salt Act. Mary Kay
Ash going off on her own to create a world-class organization. Martin Luther
King Jr. standing before the Lincoln Memorial challenging the nation with his
dream of reconciliation.
Each of these people was a great leader and impacted hundreds of thousands,
if not millions, of people. Yet these pictures can also be misleading. The reality
is that 99 percent of all leadership occurs not from the top but from the middle of
an organization. Usually, an organization has only one person who is the leader.
So what do you do if you are not that one person?
Ninety-nine percent of all leadership occurs not from the top but from the middle of an organization.
I’ve taught leadership for nearly thirty years. And in just about every
conference I’ve taught, someone has come up to me and said something such as,
“I like what you teach about leadership, but I can’t apply it. I’m not the main
leader. And the person I work under is, at best, average.”
Is that where you live? Are you working somewhere in the middle of your
organization? You may not be a follower at the lowest level of the organization,
but you’re not the top dog either—yet you still want to lead, to make things
happen, to make a contribution.

Introduction
What if you could get what you want…when you want it…and from whom
you want it—including the difficult people you all too often come across?
Would that interest you?
Would that excite you?
Practically everyone would love to have that ability, wouldn’t they?
In studying some of the most successful men and women in history—
Benjamin Franklin, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Abraham Lincoln, Mother Teresa,
Mohandas Gandhi—we notice they share many common characteristics. Each of
these winners had a burning desire, coupled with great creativity, and a total,
unshakable belief in their mission or cause. One trait which stands above all the
rest is their ability to win people over to their way of thinking through the art of
positive persuasion.

According to Webster’s Dictionary, to win means to succeed or prevail in a
contest or effort; to triumph; to be victorious. To persuade is to cause someone
to do something, especially by reasoning, urging or inducement. Persuasion
means to prevail upon. When we persuade effectively, it results in others taking
action. When we persuade positively, it results in others taking positive action.
Persuasion does not mean manipulation.

In his book The Art of Talking So That People Will Listen, Dr. Paul W. Swets
writes, “Manipulation aims at control, not cooperation. It results in a win/lose
situation. It does not consider the good of the other party… In contrast to the
manipulator, the persuader seeks to enhance the self-esteem of the other party.
The result is that people respond better because they are treated as responsible,
self-directing individuals.”
Throughout the pages of this book, you will find skills, techniques and
attitudes of positive persuasion that, as you learn, internalize and apply them,
will make your life a whole lot easier, a whole lot less stressful, and a whole lot more fun.

(By the way, although I’ve been using the phrase “positive persuasion,” the
truth is that, as Dr. Swets has pointed out, persuasion by its very nature is
positive—so from here on in, I’ll simply use the term persuasion with the
assumption that we’re talking about something that is both positive and
benevolent.)
Am I actually telling you that winning through persuasion is simply a skill?
That anyone can learn to be a winning communicator?
Yes, I am.
I know, that sounds like a bit of a stretch. It really isn’t. Persuasion skills are
not something most of us are born with. Like riding a bicycle, driving a car, or
fly-fishing, it is a skill you can learn. And it is not only a skill you can learn, it is
one you can master.

Mastering the art of persuasion. Now that’s exciting!
I’ve heard it said that success in most areas of life is based 10 percent on
technical skills and 90 percent on people skills. From my experience, those
figures ring absolutely true. In The Art of Persuasion, you’ll learn those people
skills necessary to ensure that you have all the advantages needed to put that 90
percent to work for you and for others, too; day in, day out in all areas of your
life and work.

I wish I could take credit for inventing these skills. I can’t. I’ve been very
fortunate not only to read and study the great masters of winning persuasion, but
to grow up with and learn by example from many of them as well. I’ve simply
taken what I’ve learned and applied and put it all into a simple, easy-to-use
resource. Anyone can learn these skills and apply and benefit from them for the
rest of their lives.

Here is one important key to knowing you are doing this right. If, in the
process of persuading a person to your side of an issue, they feel as good about it
as you do, then you have not bullied, coerced or manipulated. You see, genuine
winners are those people who can get what they want from others in such a way
that’s of genuine and lasting benefit to everyone involved—whether it’s better
seats at the theater or ball game, more cooperation at work and at home, the
accomplishment of your life-long dream or a variety of other advantages. I call
this winning without intimidation. Yes, you can indeed obtain satisfaction and be
loved while you’re doing it. That’s power; that’s influence.
There’s absolutely no reason to live or work as a person who’s constantly
picked on, emotionally put down, taken advantage of, or made to settle for less
in any way. And there’s certainly no reason to ever resort to bullying or
manipulating people to get what you really want, either.
What would your life be like if the benefits promised in the subtitle of this
book really were attainable, and if you truly could master them? They are—and you can.

I’m sure you’ve heard the phrase, “win/win.” Let’s do that for greater results
than anyone ever thought possible. Let’s create a world where everybody wins
through the art of persuasion.
Best of success,
Bob Burg

PREFACE TO THE 2.0 EDITION
I can hardly believe it’s been twenty-five years since I wrote the original
manuscript of Developing the Leader Within You. When I first put my fourcolored
pen to paper, I thought I was writing my one leadership book. At age
forty-five I had been on quite a leadership journey. When I started my
professional career as a minister in rural Indiana in 1969, I didn’t think about
leadership. I just worked hard. It wasn’t until I was at my second church in the
early ’70s that I realized everything rises and falls on leadership. I started my
intentional growth journey at that time and targeted leadership as one of the
areas where I wanted to grow. While I was leading that second church in Ohio, I
began teaching others leadership. In the early ’80s, I took on the leadership of a
church in San Diego. It eventually became recognized as one of the ten most
influential churches in America. While I was there I wrote Developing the
Leader Within You. At that time I also started getting many more speaking
requests. And I started a company to help me train leaders and distribute training
resources. The demands of my schedule and the opportunities to train leaders
nationally and internationally prompted me to give up my church in 1995. I’ve
spent my time writing, speaking, and training leaders ever since.

But going back to when I wrote the first edition of this book, as I prepared to
write it, I thought a lot about the greatest discovery I had made in leading those
three organizations: that leadership can be developed. I had developed the leader
within me. And my greatest desire was to share my leadership journey with
others and teach what I had learned so that they could develop the leaders within them also.

I thought I had much to share from the first twenty-five years of my
leadership life, but when I look back now, I’m struck by how much more I’ve
learned in the twenty-five years since then. That should have been no surprise to
me, since I’ve written many additional books on leadership. But sometimes you
don’t realize how far you’ve traveled until you go back and look at where you
were. It’s like going back to the home you grew up in twenty-five years later: it’s
a lot smaller than you remembered!

I can’t tell you how excited I am to share with you the things I’ve learned
since I first wrote this book. There’s so much to tell that I can hardly contain
myself—or contain it in just ten chapters.

I have extensively rewritten this entire book. That’s why I’m calling it 2.0. It
still contains the foundational lessons for becoming a good leader. It’s still the
first book I recommend that people read to start their leadership development
journeys. And it’s still the book I recommend that leaders use to mentor others in
leadership. But I’ve taken great pains to give it greater depth, to focus it more
specifically on a leader’s needs. For example, instead of doing general teaching
on integrity and attitude, as I did in the original version, I look more specifically
at how those characteristics can make someone a better leader.

In addition, I also removed two chapters that were focused on developing
staff (which I cover in depth in other books) and replaced them with two new
chapters on topics vital to developing you as a leader: servanthood, the heart of
the leader, and personal growth, the expansion of leadership. I look back now
and think, How in the world did I miss those the first time around?
If you read the original version of the book, you’re going to be pleased by all
the new material and insights I’ve included in this new 2.0 edition celebrating
the book’s twenty-fifth anniversary. I can’t imagine offering a better leadership
tune-up than this.

If this book is new to you, you’re in for a treat, because you’re going to
receive everything you need to take a significant step in your leadership journey.
And if you do everything I suggest in the application section at the end of each
chapter, you will be amazed at how much your influence, your effectiveness, and
your impact will increase in such a short time.

So let’s go. Turn the page, and begin developing the leader within you.
