The Astonishing Science of How Your Brain Creates Material Reality

Dawson Church

Praise for Mind to Matter

“If you’ve been wondering whether your thoughts really do affect your life, this
marvelous book will make you a believer. From the level of the atom to the level
of our bodies to the level of the galaxies, Dawson Church’s painstaking research
shows that mind is profoundly creative. Synthesizing hundreds of studies in the
fields of biology, physics, and psychology, he shows that moment by moment, the
energy fields of our brains are literally creating reality. These insights can have
a radical effect on your health and prosperity, and I highly recommend you
apply them in your life.”
— John Gray, #1 New York Times best-selling author of Men Are from Mars,
Women Are from Venus
“We have entered an era of healing in which the influence of consciousness in
health and illness is being validated as never before. For a view of these crucial
insights, researcher Dawson Church’s Mind to Matter is invaluable.”
— Larry Dossey, M.D., author of One Mind: How Our Individual Mind Is Part
of a Greater Consciousness and Why It Matters
“Dawson Church’s careful scientific work shows that the Law of Attraction isn’t
just a metaphysical proposition—it’s a scientific reality. Drawing from hundreds
of studies, and illustrated with inspiring real-life stories, it demystifies the
intricate mechanisms by which thoughts become things. As the boundaries of
what you believe is possible for your life are stretched by Dawson’s work, they
may never snap back to their old shape.”
— Marci Shimoff, #1 New York Times best-selling author of Happy for No Reason
“I love this book. It constantly fascinated me with delicious facts and so many
captivating stories. And it is wonderful to see science catching up with what the
shamans and sages have always known!”
— Donna Eden, author of Energy Medicine
“Once in a long while, a profoundly disruptive vision shatters the scientific
paradigm, refocuses the entire way we see the world, and opens up vast new
horizons of human potential. For our generation, this book is that vision.”
— Raymond Aaron, New York Times best-selling author of Chicken Soup for the
Parent’s Soul
“Dawson Church has again proven himself to be one of the great thinkers of our
time, demystifying the most complex principles in the universe that influence our
lives, with a story-telling ability that makes it all fun and easy to understand. By
weaving eye-opening research into engaging, heart-warming stories, an
awareness emerges of the power your own mind has to not only direct your life
but influence the collective consciousness of the universe itself which binds us
together as one.”
— Robert Hoss, co-author of Dreams That Change Our Lives; Director,
DreamScience Foundation
“This groundbreaking book presents the exciting new scientific evidence
demonstrating that our thoughts have a direct impact on the world around us,
and it shows us how to harness this knowledge for joyful and effective lives.”
— David Feinstein, Ph.D., co-author of Personal Mythology
“I believe that Mind to Matter is one of the most important books ever written.
Chapter after chapter it shows us how we are masters of our bodies and the
world around us. It’s filled with mind-blowing research that has completely
changed the way I approach my life. The results I’m getting by applying the
techniques are astonishing. They can transform your mind and the world of
matter around you. I can’t recommend this book highly enough.”
— Matt Gallant, author of Triple Your Productivity
“Mind to Matter challenges the core principles of modern medicine and
conventional science. Dawson Church makes a compelling case that the
mind/body link is more profound than we ever suspected, and that science must
expand its paradigm to include forces like consciousness, resonance, and
energy. Profusely illustrated, the book includes an impressive compendium of
research citations, from classic papers to recent breakthroughs. Many practical
examples and exercises provide tools to work on our own personal
transformation and, if the book’s thesis of interconnection is correct, our social
transformation as well. I highly recommend this book.”
— Eric Leskowitz, M.D., Department of Psychiatry, Harvard Medical School
“Dawson Church has been a pioneer in the field of healing for decades, his
research far ahead of its time. His book Mind to Matter is perfectly timed for an
era in which people are opening up to the science and research behind energy
techniques. Dawson offers a brilliant and insightful guide to how our thoughts
create our reality. Packed with fascinating history from the dawn of evolution to
the latest brain research, his work is a blueprint for both experts and nonprofessionals
looking for effective healing strategies. Dawson succinctly shows
us not just that these methods work, but the empirical basis for how they work. If
you have ever wanted to learn the science of manifestation and how your
thoughts affect your material world, this book is a must-read. It will change your
thoughts, and applying these principles every day will in turn change your
reality. The question is—what will you create after you read it?”
— Peta Stapleton, Ph.D., School of Psychology, Bond University, Australia
“Many in our culture are shifting from powerless victims to powerful cocreators.
Yet as this evolutionary impulse toward greater power emerges, we are
coming face to face with what happens when power is abused. As we face global
crises of unpredictable proportions, we need heart-based creators of deep
integrity in touch with their power now more than ever. What would be possible
in our lives and on our planet if we connected our power with our hearts? What
does science have to say about such manifesting power? Mind to Matter
explores this edge of how our power to participate in the co-creation of reality
functions from the scientific perspective. It also calls us out on how to avoid
overstating our human power, as so many ‘law of attraction’ books mistakenly
promise. As our power grows, we are called to acknowledge with humility the
paradoxical nature of how powerful we are as creators, yet how uncontrollable
the great Mystery really is. May those who read this book step fully into their
power, their hearts, and their integrity, and may the world be blessed by how
this book affects you.”

Metaphysics Meets Science
Thoughts become things. This is manifestly true. I am sitting on a chair right
now. It began as a thought in someone’s mind—every detail of it. The frame, the
fabric, the curves, the color.

Thoughts become things. This is manifestly untrue. I will never be a
quarterback for the National Football League, no matter how earnestly I think
about it. I will never be 16 years old again. I will never pilot the starship Enterprise.
Between the ways in which thoughts become things and the ways in which
thoughts can never become things there is a wide middle ground.
This book explores that middle ground.

Why? We want to be able to create to the outermost limits of our thought,
expanding our lives to the limits of our potential. We want to be as happy,
healthy, wealthy, wise, fulfilled, creative, and loved as possible. We also don’t
want to chase pipe dreams, thoughts that are never going to become things.
When we apply the rigorous standards of science to the inquiry, that middle
ground turns out to be enormous. Research shows us that with thought, used
deliberately, we can create things beyond the ordinary.

The idea that thoughts are things has become a meme in popular culture. It’s
held as a firm proposition in metaphysics, and some spiritual teachers ascribe
infinite powers to the mind. Yet there are clearly limits to human creative
abilities; I cannot manifest an aircraft carrier simply by thinking about one. I
cannot become Indonesian, jump over Mount Everest, or turn lead into gold.
New discoveries in epigenetics, neuroscience, electromagnetism, psychology,
cymatics, public health, and quantum physics, however, are showing that
thoughts can be profoundly creative. The page or device on which you now read
these words began as a thought. So did democracy, the bikini, space travel,
immunization, money, the four-minute mile, and the assembly line.

Science and metaphysics are generally considered to be polar opposites.
Science is experimental, practical, rigorous, empirical, materialistic, objective,
and intellectual. Metaphysics is spiritual, experiential, abstract, mystical,
ephemeral, internal, irreplicable, imprecise, subjective, otherworldly,
impractical, and impossible to prove. Science studies the world of matter while
metaphysics seeks to transcend it.

I have never perceived science and metaphysics as separate and have
delighted in being both a mystic and a scientific researcher. When I bring the
rigor of science to the questions of consciousness, each illuminates the other.
This book examines the science behind the creative powers of the mind. It
reviews the studies that show, step-by-step, exactly how our minds create
material form. As each piece of the puzzle falls into place, the science turns out
to be even more astonishing than the metaphysics.

This book is also full of case histories—real, up close, authentic personal
accounts of people who had an experience of mind-into-matter. Drawn from the
worlds of medicine, psychology, sports, business, and scientific discovery, these
stories run the gamut from profound to inspiring to heart-wrenching. They show
us that thoughts can become things in ways that stretch the fabric of our spacetime reality.

Barbara Brennan School of Healing, Inc

I believe Barbara Brennan could easily be regarded as the most influential
hands-on healer and clairvoyant of the 21st century. Her work is clearly
visionary and groundbreaking. Barbara Brennan’s theories of the human energy
field (HEF) are still widely quoted. In fact, her theories of the HEF have been
adapted and woven into the overall narrative of the field of energy healing. They
have served to be instrumental in informing and guiding many of the more
recently created energy healing modalities. Other aspects of her work, such as
the importance of clear intentionality, have also proven to be far-reaching. I have
no doubt her school, workshops, books, students, and overall sphere of influence
have touched thousands, if not millions, of lives all over the world.
People were clearly fascinated by Barbara’s life stories. They wanted to know
about her childhood, her healing abilities, and the unseen world of psychic
phenomena that she was able to see and experience. These subjects were often
the material of frequent questions from her students and lecture audiences.
Barbara channeled material ranging from personal to global issues and on a wide
variety of topics, including but not limited to: health, healing, psychology,
spirituality, angels, and demons. No subject that could be of service to another
was considered off-limits.

Now for the first time, the reader is able to hear Barbara’s life story in her own
words. Some of the material may feel dated and perhaps even old-fashioned.
This might be expected, considering Barbara Brennan grew up in the 1940s and
on a Wisconsin farm. She often shared that until she went away to college, she
never saw much—except cows—as she grew up. Barbara experienced childhood
in a time when spanking was still a common form of punishment by most
parents. She matured in a time when, no doubt, things were considerably
different from today’s world. However, from both a global and personal
perspective, the message Barbara delivers is timeless. From a global perspective,
mankind faces the same struggles today as in the past. From a personal
perspective, as human beings we all desire to live meaningful lives and to
maximize our creative potential.

Core Light Healing is a book that gives an account of a life that focuses on the
phenomena that have made Barbara Brennan different from others in the healing
field. Barbara’s thoughts as she works through those differences and her
struggles to come to terms with both aspects of herself—scientist and healer—
are evident throughout the book. Many of us desire to see, feel, and experience
the unseen world; this can come as a simple expression of longing to have
contact with a deceased relative. And herein lies one of Barbara’s greatest gifts:
her ability to create a bridge between the seen and the unseen worlds and to
allow the reader to walk through those worlds with her.
Core Light Healing is about the creative process to manifest the life of your dreams!

In Part I, Barbara Brennan reviews the configuration of the Human Energy
Consciousness System (HECS). She then goes on to describe the creative
process as it flows through the HECS. When the creative pulse is unblocked, we
are able to manifest our longing. Unfortunately, we all have blocks that stop the
creative flow. The blocks are where we have stopped our energy due to
wounding and traumas that have occurred in childhood. These blocks prevent us
from creating what we want and lead us in a vicious cycle of repetitive patterns.
Barbara guides us through the steps to release these blocks. When the blocks are
released, the creative energy is now free to flow, and the end result is not only
the physical manifestation of our heart’s longing but also more core essence,
more core light.
The groundbreaking Hands of Light introduced readers to the far-reaching
effects of the HEF as a vehicle for our experience of reality. In much the same
way, Part II of Core Light Healing takes the reader on an unprecedented journey
of the fourth, or astral, level of the HEF, illuminating this mysterious and often
misunderstood world and its profound effects on us, our relationships, and
humanity. The fourth level is the bridge between the three-dimensional physical
world and the higher spiritual worlds. The fourth level contains everything from
objects to beings to thought-forms. This is the level of relationship, and as such
we are always co-creating with the inhabitants of the fourth level through the
law of “like attracts like.” This level is also known as the astral world. Since the
fourth level does not exist in three-dimensional reality, this level is not visible to
the naked eye. Yet from time immemorial, different cultures have described and
had access to this world.
Part II begins with a description of how high sense perception works and how
to perceive the levels of the HECS. Before we can understand the fourth level,
we must first perceive it! Barbara then gives a detailed explanation of the fourth
level and how it functions differently from the physical world. Barbara offers
plenty of examples from her own healing practice, including her experiences of
working with various objects and beings, visiting the lower realms of the fourth
level, and her encounters with black magic.
Barbara defines the blocks in the fourth level that stop the creative process as
“time capsules” that have potentially occurred through multiple lifetimes. She
describes the process of releasing this blocked creative energy through time
capsule healings. She explains how the HECS is affected through the process of
death and traveling through the astral body.

Because the fourth level is a level of relationship, we find there various types
of cords. These cords serve to invisibly transmit information, usually between
two people. For example, we create genetic cords to our birth parents and then
relational cords to people with whom we have personal connections. These cords
can either be healthy or carry distortions that will interfere with our creative
process. Ancestral roots, which are damaged genetic cords, connect us to our
ancestors and carry false belief systems that are perpetuated through multiple
generations. Barbara Brennan gives detailed explanations on healing genetic and
relational, as well as ancestral, root cords.

Also included is channeled poetry from her guide, Heyoan, which further
elucidates and integrates the concepts presented throughout the book. Finally,
each chapter ends with questions to encourage the reader to further explore and
work with the material presented in that chapter. Enjoy the journey as we travel
from self-exploration to a guided walk through the interface between the
physical and spiritual worlds. At the end of the journey is a greater
understanding of how you are the creator of your own life!

— Susun S. Weed, author of the Wise Woman Herbal series
“I first met Rosalee de la Forêt several years ago and was immediately
impressed with her knowledge, passion for herbal medicine, and ability to
clearly communicate this information. It turns out she is also a very good writer,
and it is with great pleasure that I now hold her first book in my hands. Alchemy
of Herbs is a wonderful introduction to 29 common herbs and spices, allowing
you to understand how to use them safely and effectively for home health care,
how to make your own kitchen medicines, and how to make tasty recipes so you
can incorporate them into your diet.”
—David Winston, RH (AHG), clinical herbalist, ethnobotanist, and author
of Adaptogens: Herbs for Strength, Stamina, and Stress Relief
“So many books geared toward those just beginning to explore the world of
medicinal plants offer very basic ‘take this herb for that problem’ information,
under the assumption that the foundational underpinnings of herbalism are
somehow ‘too hard’ for beginners to grasp. Here, in plain English, Rosalee de
la Forêt shows us that the way that herbalists choose herbs for individual people
with particular imbalances isn’t some magical power or a skill attainable only
by those who can devote their lives to intense study. Instead, it is rooted in
common sense patterns that anyone can learn to recognize, given a model to do
so. That this is done using familiar herbs and spices available to all is an
invaluable bonus. A book for everyone.”
— jim mcdonald, herbalist and founder of
“Herbal medicine can offer so much. But where to start? How do you know what
herbs are good for you, and how to separate fact from fiction? Rosalee de la
Forêt presents an excellent approach to learning the rich world of herbs. As an
experienced educator and practitioner she weaves together tradition,
experience, and science to present a holistic view of each of the plants, while
providing specific and practical advice for how you can bring them into your
home and life. Alchemy of Herbs is a treasure for any health-seeker’s bookshelf.”
— Renee Davis, RH (AHG), founder of Goldroot Botanical Medicine
“Many books introduce readers to herbs and their activities, but Rosalee de la
Forêt skillfully introduces people instead to herbalism—the nuanced art of
matching plants to people. Drawing energetic traditions into a modern context
and right into our kitchens, she provides a simple and elegant system to look
beyond symptoms and generic cures and into the heart of true herbal healing.”
— Larken Bunce, clinical herbalist and co-director of Vermont Center for
Integrative Herbalism
“Alchemy of Herbs is a must-read for any herbalist, whether fledgling or
experienced! Part reference guide, part recipe book, and part herbal, this is a
book that every herbalist will reach for again and again. Rosalee de la Forêt
has a knack for teaching others how to use herbs in the best way possible by
matching people to herbs. This book is the definitive guide for the subject, giving
anyone the confidence to use herbs to their fullest potential. Each chapter is
engaging, relaying herbal information through a variety of anecdotal stories,
scientific studies, and traditional usage, mixed with a variety of unique and
inspiring recipes and gorgeous photographs. This is a book you will want to
leave sitting out on your desk, coffee table, and kitchen counter, all at the same time.”
— Kristine Brown, RH (AHG), herbalist and author/illustrator of Herbal Roots Zine
“Alchemy of Herbs is a sensory wonder, bringing us our medicines in the most
delightful and tantalizing way they can be experienced: as culinary medicines.
Step away from the bottle and the capsule and experience herbs in the full
richness they can offer both as medicines and as partners in a life rich with plants.”
— Bevin Clare, associate professor of Integrative Health at Maryland
University and president of the American Herbalist Guild
“As a French herbalist, I have a particular affinity for herbs that are both
culinary and medicinal. We have a long tradition of healing food where I live in
the South of France, mainly through the incorporation of aromatic herbs in our
daily meals. Alchemy of Herbs is what I had been hoping for for years. Rosalee
de la Forêt sends us a very important message: health does not necessarily
mean yucky potions. This book brings together beautiful pictures, tasty recipes,
and health recommendations from an expert healer. In a nutshell: this an
invitation to cooking for a long and healthy life.”
— Christophe Bernard, founder of
“Informative, concise, knowledgeable, and generous . . . Rosalee de la Forêt's
sophisticated approach and her personal experience with herbs comes through
in her beautiful recipes, which eloquently combine food and herbal medicine.
Keep this book on your kitchen shelf—you’ll refer to it for healing and
inspiration, always!”
— John Slattery, author of Southwest Foraging
“In this inspiring and practical book, Rosalee de la Forêt empowers you to
awaken your senses in order to choose the best herbs for your needs. And what
better way to experience the benefits and pleasures of herbs and spices than in
the kitchen? Whether you’re brand-new to herbs or have been using them for
years, you’ll love these enticing recipes for delicious drinks, everyday meals,
and simple remedies.”
— Emily Han, author of Wild Drinks & Cocktails: Handcrafted Squashes,
Shrubs, Switchels, Tonics, and Infusions to Mix at Home
“In Alchemy of Herbs, author Rosalee de la Forêt joyously shares her deep
wisdom of herbs to inspire and empower us to transform our kitchens into
nature’s apothecary where delicious, healing foods and herbal remedies pour
forth. Golden Milk, Hawthorn Cordial, and Nettle Leaf Dukkah are just a
sampling of the many tasty, curative recipes offered. She unveils the enchanting,
yet readily accessible world of herbalism that makes me fall right back in love
with the plant kingdom; and you will too!”
— Dina Falconi, herbalist and author of Foraging & Feasting: A Field
Guide and Wild Food Cookbook
“In her wonderfully written book, Alchemy of Herbs, Rosalee de la Forêt
encourages the reader to 'break free from the insanity of the One-Solution
Syndrome' by choosing personalized herbal formulations based on what our own
senses tell us our bodies need. What better scenario is there for using our senses
to divine this knowledge than cooking with flavorful and aromatic healing herbs
and spices? Self-empowerment begins in the kitchen as Rosalee tempts us with
dozens of mouth-watering recipes and encourages us to ‘move forward with the
mind-set of an explorer.’ Those new to plant-based healing as well as
experienced herbalists will find that this beautifully illustrated book exemplifies
the heart and soul of herbal healing through delicious food as powerful medicine.”

About the Authors
Dr. Joseph Mercola is a physician and New York Times bestselling author.
He was voted the Ultimate Wellness Game Changer by the Huffington Post and
has been featured in several national media outlets, including Time magazine,
the Los Angeles Times, CNN, Fox News, ABC News, TODAY, and The Dr. Oz
Show. His mission is to transform the traditional medical paradigm in the United

symptoms. In addition, he aims to expose corporate and government fraud and
mass media hype that often sends people down an unhealthy path.

James J. DiNicolantonio, Pharm.D., is a cardiovascular research scientist
and doctor of pharmacy at Saint Luke’s Mid America Heart Institute in Kansas
City, Missouri. A well-respected and internationally known scientist and expert
on health and nutrition, he has contributed extensively to health policy and has

of Nutrition and British Medical Journal’s (BMJ) Open Heart, a journal
published in partnership with the British Cardiovascular Society. He is the

He is also on the editorial advisory boards of several other medical journals.

Praise for
“Contrary to the goal of pervasive marketing efforts, dietary fat is fundamental
for health, disease resistance, longevity, and yes, even weight loss. Dr. Mercola
and Dr. DiNicolantonio deftly reveal how the specific fats we choose to eat may
well be the most important dietary decision we make in terms of directing our health destiny.”
— David Perlmutter, M.D., #1 New York Times best-selling author of Grain Brain and The Grain Brain Whole Life Plan
“If you want to know the real ‘fat facts,’ please read Superfuel by Drs. Mercola
and DiNicolantonio! They make a compelling and readable guide to navigate
through the often confusing dietary advice regarding the types of fat to include
in your diet as well as the ones to avoid like the plague. And spoiler alert: longchain
omega-3 fats from fish oil and other sources, and quality olive oils, are
something you need more of, not less of, in your diet daily for perfect heart and
brain health. Prepare to be amazed at what you don’t know about why we are so
sick. Read this book!”
— Steven R. Gundry, M.D., New York Times best-selling author of The Plant Paradox and The Plant
Paradox Cookbook; Medical Director, International Heart and Lung Institute, Palm Springs and Santa
Barbara, California
“Superfuel is a fascinating discussion about how much of what we’ve learned
about dietary fat is completely wrong. This helps upend much of the low-fat
dogma that has dominated nutritional thinking for the last 40 years. This book is
a must-read if you are interested in improving your health through diet.”
— Jason Fung, M.D., author of The Obesity Code
“If you would like to know the truth about which fats support health, which ones
don’t, and what foods they’re found in, open this book. It’s packed full of vital
information for lifelong health.”
— Dr. Frank Lipman, New York Times best-selling author of How to Be Well
“Dr. DiNicolantonio and Dr. Mercola have an incredible wealth of information
and insight to explain everything you need to know about the fats that fuel your
body. You’ll learn which foods you should eat, which you should avoid, and
how you should cook and consume your food for optimal health . . . physically,
mentally and emotionally. Superfuel will help and heal so many people.”
— Drew Manning, New York Times best-selling co-author of Fit2Fat2Fit
“In Superfuel, Drs. DiNicolantonio and Mercola offer a view of dietary fat that’s
powerfully perspective-shifting. They have done a deep dive into the best
research available and come up with practical, accessible guidance for taking
control of your health, starting right now.”
— Dr. Aseem Malhotra, author of The Pioppi Diet
